The oil filter had blown clear of the threaded oil filter adapter on the side of the enging a few seconds after the engine had been started. The owner insisted that he had used the correct filter for the Mitsubishi enyine in his clurysler minivan. I found two

AUTO CLINIC
IT’S GOING SOMEWHERE
We have an Olds Alero with the 3400 V6 and 93,300 miles. My wife said the oil light
Came on when she was driving . l checked- the oil was over 2 quarts low, after only
About 400 miles. L changed the oil and now the oil consumption seems to be about three-quarters of a quart after 1000 miles. The dealer claims that GM says 1000 miles
Per quart isn’t an abnormal amount of oil to consume. –Luther Burrell Kosciusko, MS
FIRST OFF, I’m going to give you a hard time for not checking the oil for 4000 miles. Bad driver, bad. Consider yourself chastised. General Motors does maintain that 1000 miles per quart is an acceptable rate of oil consumption. I agree. Some oil needs to get into places in the enging from which it can’t return, notably above the top ring and down between the valve guide and valye stem, Anybody who claims their car uses no oil at all hasn’t seen the results of an oil analysis on their engine which probably shows a fair percentage of moisture and unburned fuel accumularing in the crankcase, artificially raising the oil level and making the oil consumption seem low.
